and its contractors now say the Costa
Concordia won’t be removed from the coast of
Giglio, Italy, until late summer. Previous
estimates were that the hull would be
refloated and moved by
March or April. Costa and Titan-Micoperi,
the consortium hired to remove the hull,
gave the latest estimate at a Dec. 31
meeting to update Giglio residents.
Once floated, the wreck will be towed to an Italian port. Progress on the removal and a summary of the meeting can be found on a special website the companies have created. Thirty-two people died after the ship ran aground and capsized on Jan. 13, 2012. The Italian line said the removal process requires constant testing to make sure the hull remains in one piece and does not damage the environment.
