Iceland's First Cruise Ship Sets Sail

The Ocean Diamond - an Icelandic-run cruise ship will sail out of Reykjavík harbor and is scheduled to sail all the way around Iceland seven times this summer, and for the next three summers.

Cruise ships are very regular visitors to ports around Iceland, but this is the first time one is running for and on behalf of an Icelandic company. The cruises are being provided by Iceland ProTravel.

“For years we have been watching cruise ships coming here to Iceland and staying a very short time. We thought it was appropriate to try and find a way to sail around the country and create a new concept around it,”said the principle owner of Iceland ProTravel.

Prices vary by cabin size, but the average cost is ISK 400,000 (EUR 2,685/USD 3,046) per person. The ship is owned by Danish investors and is registered in the Bahamas and it is contracted to operate around Iceland for at least the next three years.

Each cruise lasts for ten days, giving travelers plenty of time to bask on deck in the Icelandic sun—day or night.
