Welsh Port of Newport as home for the Ryder Cup venue welcomes first
cruise call |
The Welsh port of Newport welcomes Prinsendam today
as the port’s first ever cruise call. The Holland America Line ship
is due to arrive at the docks at 11 a.m.
Passengers will visit local attractions including Cardiff Castle,
the Wales Millennium Centre and Dyffryn Gardens. Further afield, the
Welsh countryside, including Brecon Beacons National Park, is also a
major draw.
Newport offers access to the same attractions as Cardiff, and is
hosting the 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort. The biennial
golf match between Europe and the United States runs Oct. 1-3. It
will be the first time Wales hosts the event.
Associated British Ports, operator of Newport, is keen to attract
cruise passengers and hopes this major golf tournament will provide
a great showcase for the port and city.
‘While cruise ships are no strangers to some of our other Welsh
ports, such as Cardiff and Swansea, we are very pleased that Newport
is handling a cruise ship for the first time,’ said Matthew
Kennerley, ABP port director, South Wales.
Sally Edwards Hart, who manages tourism development and visitor
services for Cardiff Council, said Cardiff and South Wales have much
to offer cruisers. In partnership with ABP, the council has been
promoting calls to the area for several years, with bookings for
eight ships so far.
Prinsendam Capt. Albert Schoonderbeek will receive the Mayor of
Newport, Glyn Jarvis, on board today, along with the mayoress and
the deputy mayor.
Newport offers two berths. of 244mtr and 122mtr, and depth alongside
of 10.5mtr and 7.6mtr, respectively. |
