Azamara signs THE charter for Titanic centennial

In April 2012, as history buffs and Titanic enthusiasts around the world hone in on the 100th anniversary of the iconic liner’s sinking, Azamara Journey will be over the site of the Titanic’s final resting place in a themed charter by Willtiger Corp.

The charter was brokered by Steve Bloss of Worldwide Travel & Cruise Associates and signed by Larry Pimentel, president and ceo of Azamara Club Cruises, during an event at Royal Caribbean headquarters. He said the charter is in keeping with Azamara’s focus on world events such as the Grand Prix and Carnaval in Rio.

Departing from Boston on April 9, the voyage will arrive at the final resting place of the Titanic on the 100th anniversary of its sinking and be on site for three days while Azamara Journey receives exclusive live video footage from a remotely operated underwater vehicle.

Bill Willard, president of Willtiger Corp., mentioned that he is in negotiations for national network coverage of the event. A program involving schoolchildren worldwide is also in development.

Willard noted the Titanic has a passionate following worldwide, as evidenced by the millions of people who lined up to see the James Cameron hit movie ‘Titanic.’

The charter will lead to additional international exposure for the Azamara brand, said Edie Bornstein, vp sales and marketing. ‘It’s such an iconic story and this is a once in a lifetime event, happening only once in 100 years.

‘There will be a myriad of PR opportunities and we’ll be a part of all those.’

‘This is a world event,’ added Azamara’s Bruce Setloff, director of global charter and incentive sales.

Setloff has inked hundreds of charter cruises without ever sailing on a single one. ‘This would certainly be one I want to go on,’ he said. ‘It’s a once in a lifetime experience.’

Travel agents will be able to sell the voyage and earn commission by working with Wilcox Travel of Asheville, N.C. The cruise will also call at Halifax, where many Titanic victims are buried.

This is the second cruise related to the Titanic centennial. As earlier reported here, British travel firm Miles Morgan is promoting a ‘Titanic Memorial Cruise’ on Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral, departing Southampton on April 8, 2012.
