American Cruise Lines Building Mississippi River Boat |

American Cruise Lines, a small-ship operator based in Guilford,
Conn., is building a 140-passenger paddlewheel boat to operate on the
Mississippi River starting in 2012. The vessel is under construction at
Chesapeake Shipbuilding Corp. in Salisbury, Md., according to Tim Beebe, the
line’s vice president of marketing. The riverboat will have an old-fashioned appearance, and about 90 percent of the staterooms will have private balconies. Specific itineraries and other details are not set yet, but the company is expecting to make a full announcement in early September. American Cruise Lines is growing fast. In June, it launched the 104-passenger Independence, which is now operating cruises along the Maine coastline. The company also acquired the Queen of the West paddleboat, refurbished it and reduced its capacity to 120 passengers, and began operating it on the Columbia and Snake rivers earlier this month. American operates three other ships that accommodate 49 and 100 passengers. The U.S.-flagged ships operate along the Eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida. |
